How does LinkedIn connections work?
LinkedIn segregate people within your network as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level connections.
- 1st connections are people with whom you are connected directly by sending invitation to connect
- 2nd connections are people who you share mutual connections with ie, you and Joe Gatos are both 1st level connections with James Murray
- 3rd connections are members with whom you share extended network connections
LinkedIn encourages members to directly connect with people that you actually know in the real world. This method makes it easy for LinkedIn members not to deny any connection requests and not to mark them as people they do not know. If you try to connect with too many unknown people on LinkedIn and if they reject you as someone they do not know, then you will be temporarily restricted from connecting with other members unless you know their email address to connect.
